The courses traditionally offered on common language learning websites such as Duolinguo and Babbel propound “universal” vocabularies, invariably influenced by the realities the people who create the courses find themselves in. But not yours. Creating a custom-made Memrise* course is one of the most efficient ways to develop and study a vocabulary that caters to your every day needs with the desired language.
*Memrise is an app, not dissimilar to Duolinguo.
HOW: The language learner creates a document in which they store new words. They then create a new course on Memrise which these words can be integrated into and updated with ease. If desired, they can even add audio files.
The whole process is easier than many imagine. In this document you can find detailed steps on how to do it.
**NOTE** although this technique carries the name and sings the praises of Memrise, Memrise has shown that it is less interested in promoting autodidactic learning than previously. In 2024, to the dismay of some members of the Institute, Memrise disbanded its Community Course section, or at least seriously downgraded it, by getting rid of it on the Mobile App platform. This was a serious kick in the teeth for members who enjoyed coupling the “Hacking Memrise” experience with the “App Walking” technique. If you are considering going in this direction, then the Institue recommends exploring other avenues. We are currently testing Anki.
