Assist a Local - Immersive Intensive

knutselaar | spiritual learner | intermediate-advanced

Cancel your next holiday, live and work with a local.  Go crazy but find fluency.  Help out on a farm, live with the elderly, they like to talk, whatever it is, don’t splash your cash on university immersion courses.  Pack your study books, live with and help a local and experience real immersion

WHAT: The language learner goes to live and work with a native speaker of their desired language.  They help their host for a few hours each day and study the language for the rest of the time.

HOW: The language learner, with support from the IAALL, finds a suitable host with whom they can live and work for a period of time.  This possibilities are numerous, it could be looking after children, helping the elderly, working on a farm.  The important thing is that the language learner is comfortable with the context and that the host is aware that the language learner is there to learn the language and also needs their own study time.

EXAMPLES: Ahilan Ratnamohan stayed with Inguna Ločmele in Valdemārpils, a small district in the west of Latvia.  Ahilan was returning to Latvia and Latvian after 2 years of not practicing and he wanted to immerse himself before heading to Riga for work, where he knew it would be easy to slip back into English.  He helped Inguna around the farm and cooked while studying Latvian in his free time.
